Sewing Magic

Outside Frame 17.5 x 17.5

Actual Artwork 12 x 12

Sewing Magic was created to celebrate both the sewing machine and the embroidery fragment. I took a photo of an old Westinghouse sewing machine and made the photo into a thermofax screen. I screened that image onto a piece of hand dyed fabric using fabric paint. Then I stitched an embroidery fragment that I got from a tailor in Vietnam onto the piece. To further support the idea of the sewing machine creating the embroidery, I screened on small images in white fabric paint that mimic the pattern on the fragment. I enhanced some of them with hand stitching of my own. To finish it, I machine stitched along the borders and fused it to a felt backing.

I used double sided tape and stitches to secure the artwork to a black mat board, added a white mat board and mounted it on a foam board. The frame is a black wooden frame. The back is taped with framing tape and hanging wire is attached. It is ready to hang.
